What It Costs

What goes into the price of a flooring project

We do not post price lists, because every home is different. Instead, here are the things that actually drive the cost of installing floors in Sun Prairie and the Madison area.

The cost drivers, in plain terms

A fair quote comes from looking at your home, not from a chart. These are the factors we weigh when we put a number on a project.

Material type

Hardwood, LVP, tile, and sheet vinyl each carry a different material cost, and that cost varies within a category too. The species and grade of hardwood, the core and wear layer of an LVP, and the size and finish of a tile all shift the price. We help you balance the look you want with a material that fits the budget.

Square footage

Bigger rooms mean more material and more time on site. Total area is the largest single driver of a flooring project, which is why an accurate measurement matters before anything is ordered.

Removing the old floor

Tearing out an existing floor and hauling it away adds labor and disposal. Some materials come up cleanly, and others take more time, especially when old adhesive or fasteners are involved. We look at what is down now and account for the removal before we start.

Subfloor repair

A new floor only performs as well as what is under it. Squeaks, dips, loose boards, or damaged underlayment need to be corrected before install. The amount of prep the subfloor needs is a real cost driver and one we flag during the measurement.

Stairs

Stairs take more time per step than flat floor space. Treads, risers, and nosings are each cut and fit individually, and the trim work around them is detailed. A staircase is often priced per step rather than by square foot.

Room layout and cuts

More corners, doorways, closets, and odd angles mean more cuts and more time. An open rectangle installs faster than a layout with several nooks and transitions. The shape of the space affects labor as much as the size does.

Transitions and trim

Where one floor meets another, or where the floor meets a doorway, you need transitions and trim. Moldings, thresholds, base, and quarter round are part of a finished install and are part of the scope, not an afterthought.

Moving furniture

Clearing the room and resetting furniture takes time. Some homeowners handle it themselves, and others want us to move larger pieces. That labor is a line item we plan up front so there are no surprises on install day.

How to get a real number

The only honest way to price a flooring project is to see the space. We come out, measure, look at the subfloor and the layout, and account for tear-out, prep, stairs, trim, and furniture. From there you get a quote you can plan around, not a guess.
