Hardwood Floor Installation in Sun Prairie and the Madison Area
Solid and engineered hardwood, installed for homes and finished with care. We install new hardwood only. We do not refinish existing floors.
Solid versus engineered hardwood
Solid hardwood is milled from a single piece of wood through its full thickness. It has a substantial, traditional feel and can be a strong long term choice for above grade rooms like living rooms, dining rooms and hallways. Solid hardwood is not recommended below grade, where moisture and temperature swings are harder to control.
Engineered hardwood is built from a real wood wear layer bonded to a stable core. That core resists the expansion and contraction that solid boards are prone to, so engineered products can work in more places per the manufacturer. For many Sun Prairie and Madison area homes, engineered hardwood is the more flexible choice without giving up the look and feel of real wood.
We help you weigh solid versus engineered based on the room, your subfloor, the look you want, and the manufacturer guidelines for the specific product. The right answer is the one that fits your home, not a one size fits all recommendation.
Acclimation, done right
Hardwood is a natural material, and it reacts to the air around it. Before we install, the material needs to acclimate to your home in the room where it will go down, with the space at its normal living temperature and humidity. We follow the manufacturer instructions and NWFA guidance for acclimation, and we confirm the timing for your specific material and home before we schedule install day.
Skipping acclimation is one of the most common reasons floors fail later. Boards installed before they reach moisture balance with your home can cup, gap or buckle as they adjust after the fact. We take the time up front so the floor stays flat and tight for years.
Wisconsin winters and wood movement
Wisconsin winters dry out indoor air. As humidity drops, hardwood releases moisture and boards shrink slightly, which can open small gaps between planks. This is normal seasonal wood movement, not a sign of a bad install. Those gaps typically close again as humidity rises in warmer months.
The best defense is steady indoor humidity. We recommend keeping your home roughly 30 to 50 percent relative humidity, which limits how much the wood moves through the seasons. A whole home humidifier or room units in dry months can help hold that range. We talk through humidity control before you commit to hardwood, so you know what to expect.
Nail down, glue down and floating
There is more than one way to install hardwood, and the right method depends on the product and your subfloor.
- Nail down fastens solid and some engineered boards to a wood subfloor with cleats or staples. It is the classic method for above grade wood subfloors and gives a solid, anchored feel.
- Glue down bonds planks directly to a prepared subfloor with adhesive. It works over concrete and can reduce sound transfer, and it suits certain engineered products well.
- Floating locks planks together over an underlayment without fastening to the subfloor. The floor holds itself together edge to edge and can go over a wider range of subfloors.
We recommend the method that matches your material, your subfloor and the manufacturer instructions. The goal is a floor that stays stable and looks right for the long haul.
We install new hardwood. We do not refinish.
To be clear: we install new hardwood floors. We do not sand, refinish or recoat existing floors. If your current hardwood is structurally sound and just looks tired, a refinish may be the better value, and we will tell you that honestly rather than sell you a new floor you do not need. When it is time for new hardwood, we install it with the care your home deserves.
