Luxury Vinyl Plank Installation in Sun Prairie and the Madison Area
Rigid core LVP for basements, kitchens, baths and busy family rooms. Water resistant, scratch friendly, and installed with a flat subfloor and the expansion gaps the manufacturer calls for.
Why homeowners choose LVP
Luxury vinyl plank has become one of the most popular floors in Sun Prairie and the Madison area, and for good reason. It gives you the look of wood with real world durability, comfortable underfoot feel, and resistance to the spills, scratches and daily wear that come with a busy household. For basements, kitchens, bathrooms and homes with pets or kids, LVP is often the most practical choice.
Modern LVP uses a rigid core that helps the planks lay flat and resist dents. The wear layer takes the daily abuse that would mark a softer floor, and the printed design layer gives a convincing wood or stone look. We install it with tight seams and clean transitions so the finished floor reads as a single, continuous surface.
Rigid core options
Rigid core LVP is built around a solid, dimensionally stable core rather than a flexible one. That rigidity helps the planks resist bending underfoot and hides minor subfloor imperfections better than older flexible vinyl. Within rigid core, there are a few constructions, and the right one depends on your room, budget and the look you want.
We help you compare options rather than push a single product. The differences between rigid core constructions come down to thickness, core density, wear layer quality and attachment method, and we walk through what each means for your home before you decide.
Waterproof does not mean floodproof
A waterproof core is a real advantage, but it is worth being precise about what it means. The core itself resists water damage, which is why LVP handles spills and damp mopping far better than solid hardwood. But a waterproof core does not mean a flooded room is fine. Water can still get under the edges, around seams, and beneath the floor where it can affect the subfloor or trap moisture.
So we treat LVP as water resistant in practice: clean up standing water, address leaks promptly, and do not let spills sit. That is honest guidance, and it keeps the floor performing the way the manufacturer intended.
The subfloor has to be flat
LVP is more forgiving than tile, but it is not immune to a bad subfloor. Because the planks are relatively thin and rigid, any dip or bump underneath telegraphs through to the surface. A floor that looks flat can still fail a flatness check, which is why we measure before we install.
Many manufacturers specify the subfloor be flat to about 3/16 inch over 10 feet. That is a tighter standard than it sounds, and it is the difference between a floor that locks together cleanly and one that flexes, clicks or separates. We check the subfloor, patch or level as needed, and only then lay the planks. Prep is not glamorous, but it is what makes an LVP install last.
Expansion gaps and floating floors
Most LVP installs as a floating floor, which means the planks lock together edge to edge and are not fastened to the subfloor. Floating floors expand and contract with temperature and humidity, so they need an expansion gap around the perimeter of the room. Skip the gap and the floor can buckle when it has nowhere to move.
One detail that catches homeowners off guard: a floating floor generally should not be pinned under kitchen islands. Per most manufacturers, the weight of a heavy island can trap the floor and prevent it from expanding, which leads to buckling at the edges. We plan the layout around fixed cabinetry and follow the manufacturer guidance for your specific product, so the floor is free to move the way it is designed to.
Great for basements, pets and kids
LVP shines in the rooms that are hardest on floors. Basements benefit from its moisture resistance and stable core. Kitchens and bathrooms like the easy cleanup. Homes with pets appreciate the scratch resistance, and families with kids get a floor that takes spills and scuffs in stride. If your household is hard on floors, LVP is usually near the top of the list.
